评选方法 17个专科领域中，根据数据统计进行评比，这些数据包括三个方面：声誉度、死亡率和其他医疗相关指标。

从85万名执业医生中随机挑选相应专业的200名医师进行问卷调查，请他们列出除自己所在医院之外的5所最好的医院，而不考虑费用和地理位置等额外因素。 "声誉度"的得分由2006，2007，2008三年里选择该医院的医生综合百分比计算得出。
[*]死亡率
死亡率的计算是根据2003，2004和2005年三年里，罹患某种疾病的医保病人实际死亡数与平均预计死亡数之比，预计死亡率中修正了严重病例的情况（严重程度调整系数源于3M健康信息系统软件），小于1意味着好于预期，反之则表示较预期更差。死亡病例应该是在入院治疗后30天以内发生的，不过癌症死亡率是从收治到放弃治疗的时间内列入计算。
[*]其他医护相关指标
这项指标集中反应了服务质量，例如病人数量，相对护理人员数量，技术先进性和相关职业协会的评价。其中的许多数据来自美国医院协会2005年的会员调查。
