End Tidal CO2 is a mandatory anesthesia monitor recommended by American Society of Anesthesiologists. Even for sedation cases, it is recommended to monitor respiration to reduce episodes of apnea and bad outcome. Some of the slides are provided by Covidien.

The monitoring of end tidal CO2 is good for intubated patients, but may be not necessary for sedated dental patient who received intravenous sedation. Because sedated patient's expiration may be not via his/her nose during dental treatment in dental clinics.

Good points. Actually ASA mandates that all sedation patients should receive ETCO2 monitoring since 2012. There are cannulas which can sample the nose and mouth simultaneously available.
